Frequently Asked Questions on the topic of Metrolosys

How can I measure a part with a probe using the same machine that cut it?

Advanced 3D Volumetric Laser Calibration reduces machine tool uncertainty by processing collected probe data through the calibration result, a 3D error map compensation table.

How would Metrolosys benefit me over using the macros that come with my probe?

Macros that come with probes are limited, inefficient, and unless you are a very experienced software programmer, forget about writing custom macros.  In addition, try to find or write a macro to measure positional tolerances relative to specified datum features (it's just not going to happen.)

If my CNC programmers don't understand GD&T, how can they create an inspection process?

Metrolosys is intended for programming by personnel who have an understanding of GD&T basic concepts.  Metrolosys is another tool for Quality to use, continuing independent verification of machined parts.

However, some facilities may wish to implement Metrolosys within the machining processes, and machinists use basic GD&T concepts on a daily basis, often without realizing the connection.

If Metrolosys is for Quality Personnel, then I assume extensive CNC programming and machine-tool operation would be a requirement?

Not true. Metrolosys is used off-line in the Quality Department.  Quality personnel create an inspection process as they would in programming a CMM.  Metrolosys is based on the DMIS programming language, utilizing GD&T standards.  Therefore, Quality people understand immediately how to apply measurements and tolerances during the creation of the inspection process.

As for probing G-code, Metrolosys does the rest, by merely selecting a machine-tool post processor from a list.

The final probing program is then sent to the machine using the same method you use to send a part program to the machine; i.e.: DNC, floppy, network, RS-232, etc.

Does Quality operate the machine?

No. The machine-tool operator runs the machine as always. Typically, the probe, which resides in the tool changer, is loaded by the probing program. Quality personnel may witness the probing or remain in their department.

Probing results are saved to a file, which is sent back to Quality to automatically generate a complete GD&T inspection report.

Which machine controllers and probes does Metrolosys support?

Metrolosys will support every controller with probing ability, using any probe that has been integrated with the controller.  The ability for the controller to output collected values to your PC is also required.
